The Sri Lankan government and Canadian partners have restarted the previously announced 100MW floating PV project, which has given the green light to the project.
Earlier this week, the Cabinet Department signed an agreement to add a floating project to the Maduru Oya Reservoir in the eastern part of the island nation of Sri Lanka.
The project was first proposed in 2017 and was approved by the Cabinet Ministry for development by a joint venture between Sri Lanka and the Canadian Solar Energy Research Institute. This collaborative partnership was proposed by the Canadian government.
This week, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Energy Minister Ravi Karunanayake jointly agreed to the project. President Maithripala Sirisena is also the Minister of Development of the Mahaweli Basin, where the reservoir is located. The next process will be decided by the newly formed steering committee.
Last week, the ministers agreed to the decision to develop 28 small-scale solar projects across the island, followed by a decision to agree on the development of floating PV projects. The power station selected by the Negotiating Committee will be sold at a rate of 12.84-15.93 rupees ($0.072-0.089) per kWh.
Last year, Sri Lanka actively promoted the development of photovoltaic power generation projects and issued a tender notice for 10MW bidding projects and 90MW small solar projects. In 2017, Sri Lanka raised $50 million from the Asian Development Bank to develop a 50MW rooftop PV project.
