Groenleven, a Dutch renewable power developer, plans to build Europe's largest floating photovoltaic project to date, a 48-megawatt project located in a quarry in Kremer Zand en Grind.
Groenleven indicates that the sand quarry near Drenthe is no longer in use, and solar panels will be installed in extraction pools and other inland waterways.
To make room for the floating solar project, Kremer Zand en Grind will transfer sand extraction and drying equipment to other industrial zones.
The company will consume some of the power generated by the system, and the rest will be sold locally. The company did not disclose any details of the PPA agreement in its project announcement.
Great potential
The Netherlands Applied Water Research Foundation (STOWA) recently issued guidance policies and tools for companies interested in developing floating photovoltaic projects in the Netherlands, where water resources are abundant. The guidelines describe the conditions under which solar panels are allowed to be placed on water and outline possible impacts on aquatic ecosystems. The two remediation tools can help developers by promising programs to see the impact of floating solar projects on water quality and quantity, as well as ecosystems.
The Netherlands has tremendous floating photovoltaic potential, with about 52,000 hectares of shallow inland waters. Rijkswaterstaa, the Dutch water management agency, also plans to build a floating photovoltaic project. In 2017, the Institute indicated that the plan was to build a photovoltaic project on the surface of IJsselmeer Lake.
In January 2018, a Dutch consortium supported by RVO, a state enterprise, announced a project to develop a sensitive design for floating solar panels in inland waters.
In September 2017, China announced its first floating solar scheme.
